BEATENBERG STAMINA

The floaty indie-pop of South African trio Beatenberg brings bouncy rhythms and memorable melodies to each track they drop. The latest, ‘Stamina’ is accompanied by a bizarre, retro video that centres on a white room full of slowly developing objects. Their unique sound combines many musical elements, from house to Mbaqanga. Of their place in South African music, they say: “coming from a post-rainbow nation generation of musicians, I guess we play our part in a new South African-ness, incorporating various identities whilst being mindful of the country’s many influences. As with South Africa’s recent wave of successes (beyond its own boundaries) such as John Wizards, Jeremy Loops, Alice Phoebe Lou and Dope Saint Jude, we want to play our part in reinventing and evolving what South African music is and can sound like, regardless of its controversial history of separation. We, like our peers, want to do that fully on our own terms”. This track could easily be the starting point for another bout of success akin to their 2014 Album Of The Year win at the South African Music Awards. -Dan Peeke
